Clinical Pharmacology:

Fexofenadine is a second generation antihistamine. It is a peripheral histamine H1 receptor antagonist that binds to and block the H1 receptors preventing histamine from

binding to these receptors and thus blocking the allergic reaction.

It is mainly used to treat allergic conditions like allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic urticaria (hives).

The usual dose for treating hay fever is:

120mg once a day for adults and children aged 12 years and over.

The usual dose for treating hives is:

180mg once a day for adults and children aged 12 years and over.

-Coadministration of fexofenadine hydrochloride with erythromycin or ketoconazole may result in  increase in the level of fexofenadine in plasma.

-The administration of an antacid containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide gels may reduce the bioavailability of fexofenadine, most likely due to binding in the gastrointestinal tract. It is advisable to leave 2 hours between administration of fexofenadine hydrochloride and aluminium and magnesium hydroxide containing antacids.
